"American anesthesiology is undergoing its greatest challenge in many decades. In part, we find ourselves unprepared for the changes in the system of reimbursement because we have honed our intraoperative technical skills at the expense of perioperative care. In this area we can learn from our European colleagues.
"Our patients are our best advocates. It means that we have to put in as much effort outside the operating room as within. At the same time, we need to actively participate in hospital administration with our surgical and medical colleagues. It is time to make our presence felt as fully fledged members of our hospitals' professional staff.
"I believe that if we do this, we will weather the current tempest, and
American anesthesiology will emerge, although perhaps poorer, certainly
wiser and stronger." |
