This short article in the January 8, 1997 edition of JAMA has information for the novice computer user as well as the seasoned "cyberwarrior". The authors summarize their goal nicely: "....we will try to demystify the technology and illustrate exactly what occurs when a user clicks the computer mouse and ventures out to visit a Web site.

We will also highlight some choice locations to serve as examples of the depth and breadth of information that currently exist for clinicians on the Web." The brevity of this article is deceiving. The authors explain some of the underlying design characteristics of the Internet which make it possible for so many and so varied devices to communicate with remarkable reliability.

They then provide a thumbnail sketch of web terminology, beginning with URL's, and for those with greater interest provide reference to their website, which, among many other features, offers access to an extensive dictionary of terms and links valuable to all levels of users (http://www.MedsiteNavigator.com). Finally, of general interest to all practitioners who rely on biomedical information, the authors offer 18 websites which may not be on everyone's bookmark listing.
